The artificial sweetener Cyclamate “Sodium”
It has been revived the controversy around the artificial sweetener Cyclamate “Sodium”, by the decision in Venezuela on prohibit its consumption particularly in the product Coca-Cola Zero, the famous brand of soft drink.
The controversy began in Mexico by the year 2007, based on the fact of its prohibition in the U.S. and Japan, for years by considered carcinogenic.
In contrast this artificial sweetener is used in more than 100 countries, including the Latin Americans, in different foodstuffs and pharmaceuticals, use based on the endorsement of the Joint Committee of Experts in Food Additives of FAO (Organization of Food and Agriculture of the United Nations).
What is the Cyclamate Sodium?
The Cyclamate sodium or “ciclohexilsulfamato,” discovered in 1937, also known as E 952, is a sweetener whose main feature is not contain calories, for which he joined the food industry, according to the concept Light or low-calorie as an ingredient suitable for the diets, because your power sweetener is superior to another in nearly 50 times.
At present the two agencies global health, WHO and FAO endorse its use, considering that does not cause damage to health, reaching this endorsement to more than 100 countries in world, among which is the European Union, China, Australia, Canada, Argentina, Brazil, Chile, etc.
But the agency American FDA forbade definitively in the 1980S, which is unleashed the controversy a time and again from those years, renewing today in Venezuela.
For its part, the Company PepsiCo Spain launched a statement with regard to this situation clarifying that none of their products (Pepsi, Pepsi Light, Pepsi Max and Pepsi Twist) containing Cyclamate Sodium, ensuring that they meet the standards of quality, required by the relevant agencies of the European Union.
