Progress in decades in the U.S. in lowering cholesterol, blood pressure and snuff consumption stagnated over the increasing rate of obesity and heart diseases cause 400,000 deaths in the country this year, experts said on Monday.

A study by British scientists found that about half of those deaths could be prevented if people ate healthier foods and stop smoking.

Experts warned that there is no room for complacency when it comes to the risks to heart health.

Simon Capewell from the University of Liverpool said that recent trends in weight were “alarming”, with an estimated 1,500 million adults worldwide are overweight by 2015.

“Although the number of deaths from heart disease fell in the U.S. in the last four decades, now is leveling off among men and women,” she wrote in a study published in the weekly magazine of the World Health Organization (WHO).

“The reduction in total cholesterol in blood has been modest, blood pressure is rising among women and obesity and diabetes is increasing in both sexes,” he said. Read the rest of this entry »

Fail to Control a Computer With the Brain

July 15th, 2009 by san-felice team

Biomedical NeuroEngineering Group at the University Miguel Hernández (UMH) and the Center for Biomedical Research Network in Bioengineering, Biomaterials and Nanomedicine have developed a brain-computer interface that lets you control the computer and even surf the Internet using brain activity.

Research on brain-computer interface, led by Jose Maria Azorin and Eduardo Fernandez, professors at the UMH, and in which the student participates Jose Luis Sirvent, will be presented in April at one of the major conferences worldwide on intelligence artificial.

Electroencephalogram
this interface allows full control of the computer and all its applications. The tool uses electroencephalographic signals (EEG) that are collected using surface electrodes placed on the head of the person.

The interface can detect what the intention of the person using evoked potentials, corresponding to EEG signals that reflect an automatic response from the brain to external visual stimuli.

This research is part of a research project granted by the Ministry of Science and Innovation, which are developing brain interfaces to control robotic devices.

Cancer

July 14th, 2009 by san-felice team

Cancer is the result of sprawl in which the body cells divide and proliferate so disorganized, whose growth and proliferation is unchecked, unable to organize and regulate itself, reaching a volume increase that can manifest visibly is what is known as a tumor.

According to the type of fabric where it originates can be classified as carcinomas are those formed from cells that line the interior or exterior surfaces of the body, such as skin or intestine. The originating from deep structures of the body such as bone or muscle, are called sarcomas. The former are much more frequent than the latter. When they begin to affect distant cells to the primary site of her appearance is what is known as metastasis.
Cancer Symptoms

The symptoms of cancer is very varied, as this depends on the type of cancer and the organs, tissues and systems that are affected.
Cancer Treatment

it is vital that attention be given to any manifestation that does not match the regular behavior of a function of an organ or the external appearance of any sign, spots, warts, sores that do not heal. At this point you should go immediately to a doctor to prescribe a series of diagnostic tests. A biopsy is usually required the removal of the tumor or part thereof, to be examined under a microscope to determine the degree of transformation that have suffered the cells that make up the fabric, if there are no alterations in the normal way that cells must have , then we speak of a benign tumor, not cancer.

If on the contrary is abnormal, the pathologist classified the type of cancer and the oncologist fix the most appropriate treatment. There are several alternatives, which depend on the cancer type, extent, presence or absence of metastasis, patient age, presence of other complications, and other characteristics are taken into account by the specialist when choosing between surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, new alternatives or combinations between them.
Cancer Prevention

Some of the preventive measures you can take to avoid cancer is, first perform an annual checkup with his doctor in the case of the woman’s gynecologist take a sample for the Pap smear and perform a scan breasts. In the case of men, especially after age 40, go to the urologist who will perform diagnostic tests of the functioning of the prostate. Awareness by all in relation to lead a proper and balanced diet, quitting smoking, take precautions like using sunscreen when going to expose to strong sunlight, are among the easiest ways to avoid this evil.
